In his article, Western Modernism vs. east Thought, pseudo Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir, presents several ideas to show that Asiatic societies and kitchen-gardenings, by dint of preservation of traditions and morals, are greater than Western society. He expresses his fantasy that Asiatics should hold on to their traditions to keep from succumbing to Western immorality and corruption. Mahathir draws on race and religion as main differences between east and Western burnish, and drops them to show the tolerance of Asian societies. He similar brings up the problem of the excessive freedom evident in Western democracy, and illustrates the appearance in which his version of democracy is the preferent way to govern a nation. He goes on to use the qualification of the Asian economy as a secernate archetype of the effectiveness of his form of democracy. Mahathir makes use of these examples to argue his peak that east societies are at least equally as desirable o f recognition as their Western counterparts. Mahathir is attempting to convince the reviewer that Asia is a better society, and hence, superior to the West. Somewhat ironically, he states that Europeans felt up they were a superior people with a superior culture (p 74). Mahathir is criticising Europeans for thinking themselves superior when he himself is imposing his views of the superiority of Asian culture to the reader. Mahathir states that the idea of Western superiority has its roots in racial prejudice. He writes, There is racial prejudice and trace in Asia, too, but it has never taken the form of racial discrimination based on the color of a mortals skin (p 77). However, there have been many examples of racial discrimination in Asia based on skin colour, for instance, the 1964 race riots in capital of Singapore between Chinese and Malay groups, which was a main practise of the separation of Malaysia and Singapore (Vervoorn 2006: 20).
